The New York Times - The Local - Greene Hill Food Coop Mulling Putnam Ave Location

It’s not pretty. The block is lined with shuttered storefronts. An empty lot abutting the location is overrun with weeds. But the members of the Greene Hill Food Co-op see a home full of potential in a shuttered 2,700-square-foot building on Putnam Avenue.

Last night, they voted unanimously to have the organization take steps toward a lease-signing for a strip of mostly vacant storefronts on Putnam Avenue, between Grand Avenue and Downing Street, in Clinton Hill. The final vote would likely come at the next general meeting in July, once the lease has been written up. (more)

Daily News - City spends $1.2M to help educate citizens on composting

Dena Robins got hooked on composting after speaking with the department's NYC Compost Project reps at a recent farmers' market in the Bronx.

Robins, who grew up in the Patterson Houses during the 1960s, recalled the pollution pumped out by the trash incinerators in the Mott Haven community. 

"The cinders used to go into your eyes during the daytime," said Robins, who now lives in Williamsbridge. "It was all unsanitary and polluting." (more)
